Authors Behaving Badly #13

Authors Behaving Badly: When
Authors React Badly to Negative Reviews and Criticism!

Or: How NOT to Handle Bad Reviews!

When an author puts a book out into the world they must know it's not going to get completely positive feedback. All books, throughout history, from Hamlet to The Da Vinci Code, have people who love them and people who hate them. And most authors handle the negative reviews pretty well (even if they're crying inside).
However, some authors decide that they want to fight their critics. Some get personal. Some get downright nasty. Did someone say car crash?

I was originally going to post one article on this but so many authors have behaved badly that I thought I would make it a weekly feature! I bringz you all the drama every Thursday from authors who have been a little naughty.

13. Emily Giffin, Plus Husband and Assistant, Run Amok on Amazon!

Who Is She: Emily Giffin, author of best-selling novels such as 'Baby Proof' and 'Something Borrowed'.

She currently has 115,304 Facebook page likes and 26, 341 followers on Twitter. Which is a lot.

What She Responded Badly To: It wasn't just she who responded badly. Oh no. Some one-star reviews on Amazon caught the eye of her husband and her assistant and they decided to go in, all guns blazing, and denounce those reviews. Oh, and then Emily Giffin decided it would be a good idea to share it all with her Facebook followers and Twitter followers. That's 115,304 people on Facebook and 26,341 on Twitter. I bet you can guess what happened next.

What Made the Fur Fly:  OK so here is the review on Amazon that started it all:

Not too bad right? I mean, it's not a positive reviewer but I can see nothing in there attacking the author personally. They have read the book and have issues with the text itself, not the author. However, the review caught the attention on Emily Giffin's husband, who responded thus:

*(screencap taken from as the original comment was deleted by Amazon)*

Someone then responded who had identified the comment as coming from an account associated with the author, Emily Giffin. Her husband then clarifies that it was him who posted the comment, not Emily herself:

There are then many comments attacking the reviewer and her opinions . While this is going on, Emily Giffin decides to post all about it on her Facebook page (did I mention she has 115, 304 fans on there that she's basically encouraging to hassle one reviewer?):

She continues to post about it and find it amusing, even though more and more comments are flooding into Amazon attacking the reviewer:

Then, later on her Facebook page, she states that, 'the whole thing began with some malicious comments about me--comments that seemed personal':

Perhaps later on malicious comments were posted that have since been deleted, but it certainly didn't begin that way. It was a genuine review by someone who didn't like the book, a reviewer who purchased her book, read it, and was disappointed. As to the second review she refers to, 'the girl who changed her 5 star review to a 1 star review' I have screencapped that review below:

So, this reviewer was inspired to change her review due to Emily Giffin's, and her husband's, conduct towards reviewers. Yet, that didn't stop Emily's assistant stepping in and posting a very aggravated comment on the updated review:

There are subsequent comments from her assistant defending her honour ). Emily Giffin again posts the exchange to her 115,340 fans on facebook to sink their teeth into:

Oh, and just so it's on the record, this was all posted to Emily's 26,341 followers on Twitter too:

Later, came an apology from Emily's husband through her Facebook page:

Now let's move on? I don't think it's going to be quite that easy Emily. I mean the internet is known for letting things disappear. Isn't it?

Then, her husband published his own apology on the second Amazon review:

If Emily had no idea about the content of the exchange then why was she posting about it on Facebook and Twitter? If you go to Amazon and look at the one star reviews of her book, you will see how many people have recently been attacking the reviewers, which is clearly no coincidence. Really, she should've known better.

Oh and the second reviewer now claims to have been recieving abusive voicemails and phonecalls due to the fallout from this:

If that is true, then that is really appalling. The words 'spiralling out of all proportion' come to mind. However, Giffin didn't seem to take it too seriously, even saying to a concerned person on Facebook that the reviewer was enjoying the drama,

I wonder if, in the Giffin household, a certain husband's computer has been confiscated. Probably wise.

Who do you think was most in the wrong in this case? Reviewer 1, Reviewer 2 Emily Giffin, Husband or Assistant? All of them? Let me know!

The husband has now posted an apology under Corey's review. Too little to late is my opinon. I place the blame on the author honestly. She posted this on her FB page and on her twitter for her rabid fangirls to call the reviewers out. The husband was to blame also, but mainly the author.

    1. Cannot agree more and the author should apologize then BAN her hubby from computers and take a vacation sounds like he needs one. BADLY LOL

  • What I think? I think that Emily's husband if that's really who it was and not Emily taking cover because she caused a HUGE mountain out of a review that was in no way bashing. I think her books I have on my shelf I will stay clear of reviewing. I also think that Emily should not say thank you to her asst. does she need a defender or should she stand up for herself. Authors need to think not everyone is going like your book, bad reviews are good because they make people compare from good to bad then want to judge for themselves. I recently was bashed for not writing a quick enough review. Author sent me a book in July then wanted the review I explained I had 3 books ahead of them and the harassment and words via email were so hurtful. I say that Emily is condoning what her husband and asst. are doing and this will only cause no one to review her books being afraid of the backlash. Just like many reviewers have stopped reviewing self-published books because of the black list. Why must people get so angry. I see nothing wrong with the original review. I think Emily's family needs major anger management classes. I only hope Emily's husband doesn't backlash against me. LOL I'm a reviewer and I have written more than 1 review. My thoughts he sounds like the PSYCHO!!!! Thanks for the post

  • This is surprising coming from such a well known author!! You would think she and her family would know that not everyone is going to like your work. And i find it hilarious that she is crying about being #2 on the NYT Bestsellers list when her books have been made into MOVIES! How many authors would kill for that?

  • I'm surprised her husband made such an awful comment when she's such an established author. I personally haven't read any of her books, but I feel like her husband should've known better. And the author shouldn't have posted it to her facebook. I know the argument that it's her facebook and she should be honest, but at the same time when she's followed by so many people she should still watch what she says, otherwise this big fiasco is what happens.

  • I might be alone here, but my gut says it was not the husband who first posted, but he's taking the heat to help her out. Why would she be on his computer? There's only one computer in their house? I know it happens, but I don't know... It just doesn't pass the sniff test. He can insist all he wants. I just don't buy it. I don't believe she hasn't read Amazon reviews in years. Why is he trolling for bad reviews and trying to protect her honor if she's never on Amazon? I just can't see a MAN doing this sort of thing because of a short negative review that really wasn't all that bad compared to a lot of negative reviews. She has so many positive reviews and legions of fans. So this random person did not like the book that's obviously a huge hit already. She did not say anything about Emily, the writer/person, in the first post that required any sort of chivalrous or protective response from the husband. There were no personal attacks deleted regardless of what Emily and camp keep insisting to justify the questionable behavior. I think the author was having a human moment and thought it might be cute to zing the one-star reviewer who had only reviewed one book. Bad call. The reviewer called her out. All that said, I will still buy Emily's books. I'm a fan of the work. But this whole thing does change my opinion of the author.

    1. I agree... If you look at all of her postings, she is ALWAYS quick to say "I never go on Amazon" or "there was a bad review, Or SO I HEARD!" hmm Me thinks thou doth protest too much...

  • Whatever the reviewer wrote (which in my opinion is actually a completely legitimate, non-personal review), all three (author, husband and assistant) made it worse just by drawing so much attention to it. If whoever-it-was had never commented, if the author hadn't put it all over Facebook, it would have just been a review that people most probably skipped over as it wasn't hugely in-depth.

  • There was absolutely nothing personal about the review that started this chaos...nothing. I don't read Emily Griffin books bc they don't appeal to me, but I certainly wouldn't read them now if I did. How childish. An author who's #2 on the NY Times Bestseller list should know better...as should her husband and her assistant. Unbelievable.

    1. Agree 100% with this statement! Any curiosity I had about her books has just been wiped away due to sheer disgust.

What is going on with authors nowadays?!?

  • I think if you can't handle criticism then you shouldn't be writing. Bad reviews are going to happen. Just deal with. Emily could have stopped her hubby but she choose not to. She let it escalate to the point it did. In my opinion she made the situation worse by making fun of it on FB and Twitter. That was shameful.

  • Wow. Haven't read Giffin in a long time, and am now in no rush to read her ever again.

Because I know how important it is for authors to get reviews, I review books I read, as honestly as I can, unlike some who give EVERYTHING a 4 or 5 star review. On rare occasion I feel that a book only deserves 2 stars, or 1, and I will explain why *I* think so. It is NEVER about the author (except in a case like "avid reader," when I have been a longtime fan of the author and feel s/he has dropped the ball on that particular book).

Since I hope to have my own books up there some day, I am sure I too will be cringing under unfavorable reviews and gloating over good ones, but I hope to show more class when the day comes. ESPECIALLY after people told her that one reviewer was receiving nasty phone calls, Giffin, IMO, should have posted on her FaceBook page, more than once, that this was unacceptable, instead of this phony, "Now I'm taking the high road and not mentioning it ever again." Unprofessional, and unlikeable.

  • I can not even believe such a well known author would allow this to go on. She should have put a stop to it, immediately. She's sold so many books why should she, or her husband, or her assistant, even care if a few people didn't care for the book. Move on!

    Reply
  • Sadly, one little honest negative review has hurt her more than anything else. I see nothing wrong with the review. The reviewer used the authors name only in stating what she wrote, not writing about who she is as an author. There was no personal attack. I think her idea of staying away from amazon reviews is a good idea. Too bad her family and assistant didn't agree with her. And too bad that she felt the need to "put fuel to the fire" by posting it to her facebook to get everyone in a rage. She has no one to blame but herself. You know, I expect this behavior from new authors, not someone who should be mature and confidant.

And I agree with others. I think Emily Griffin should have made a statement on her facebook saying that the phone calls and threats are not acceptable. No matter what the reviewer wrote. Instead, she's taking the cowards way out by trying to get people to sweep it under the rug instead of doing the right thing. Shameful.

wow, nice collecting of the evidence there! Very thorough.

Never heard of this author, am probably not in this genre's demographic anyway, but she and her "team" have basically made me and I'm sure others in the same boat now associate her name with "author who feels the need to sic her personal army on an Amazon reviewer who didn't like the book." Of which there seem to be more than a few right now.

Also, it's always the low list authors who pull this stuff. The better you sell, the more professional you behave.

Ah, if only that were true. Emily Giffin has 6 NYT bestsellers, one of which was made into a feature film. Professionalism doesn't automatically come with sales. In fact, money and success reveal who you really are. If you're not professional, success will reveal that, as shown here.

  • The behavior of the Emily camp seems positively juvenile.

  • I'm going to say this. If they are so supportive of each other why then at some point did they not compare notes as to what was going on on Amazon and Facebook. It's not that hard if your in the same house even easier. Two different places (ie work and home) um still super easy. I can't believe for as long as this was going on neither knew what the other was doing or saying. BS and the attitudes of Emily and her husband are atrocious. If she's nice at book signings it's because she trying to sell books. HELLO. Stating she is nice at book signing etc does not excuse her behavior for this. If Kate was my assistant she would be fired for the simple fact that she does not know how to handle herself when things like this occur. Ticking off your readers and potential readers is crazy. Encouraging bullying should not be tolerated. That original review sounded honest to me. I have seen reviews like it many times before. Not everyone is going to love or even like your book. Move on. If Emily's husband really thought this person was harrassing her previously bringing that onto a site like Amazon was not a smart thing to do either. I won't be reading any of her books that's for sure.

  • The whole thing, as Angela says, was juvenile from the beginning (the response, I mean, not the original review), but I was most outraged, I think, by Emily accusing "avid reader" of enjoying the drama. I very much doubt that someone posting their very first review on Amazon enjoyed being deluged with threats and insults from thousands of rabid fangurls.

This is why I think that for the most part, authors shouldn't respond to reviewers at all - not to say thank you, or to argue, or anything. Reviews are not written for authors, they're written for other readers. And there has never been, and there will never be, a positive outcome for the author who decides to "defend" his/her book to a bad review. Besides, books don't need defending - a review is one person's opinion. It is completely subbjective and if someone thinks your book sucks, it's not like you can prove it doesn't.

(Of course, I've broken my own rule a couple of times. Once to respond to a reviewer who wondered why a novella was so short, and most recently to say "Oh, ouch. OUCH" to a reviewer who loved one of my books but doubted I would ever "get around" to writing a secondary couple's story. Being a slow writer is like being overweight - I know I am, but it still hurts when someone points it out.)

    1. In general, it strikes me as a bit creepy when authors respond to reviews on a regular basis. I understand that some are trying to express appreciation, but the authors who do that always seem self-obsessed. I mean, it get it. I hope to one day check Amazon reviews of my book, but I hope it doesn't become an unhealthy obsession!

  • The worst part of all of this is she now has more "likes" on Facebook than before this started.

    1. Not unusual. You have to "like" her FB page to be able to access the content and post on it. Doesn't mean you like her necessarily; could mean you're interested in watching a PR train wreck. I'd never heard of her before all the kerfluffle; now I've heard of her, but for all the wrong reasons.

    2. I have found that some Facebook pages allow you to comment without Liking them. I wonder if that's just a setting or if people just think you have to Like something to be able to participate. (?)

  • Aside from the obvious atrocity of bullying a reviewer, Emily and Co lied repeatedly. They lied about the original review and on and on. I agree with previous comments, I think she went at the reviewer, not hubby. She made it seem like he was defending her, that sent the fangirls into a frenzy. Judging by her reactions and comments, she has a huge ego. My bet is she pours over the reviews continuously. All negative comments are gone from her Fb page. Even an entry in Wikipedia has been deleted. I'm sure St. Martin's has called in the big internet image repair guys to make this go away.

  • Folks are saying they're shocked that such a "successful author" would do such a thing, but really... all the book sales in the world, all the money, all the movie deals, all of it doesn't magically transform anyone into a good person or a mature person or a person with class and grace. If those qualities weren't there to begin with, all a pile of cash does is make that person exactly who they were plus a pile of cash. The behavior shown in this instance was prolonged and repetitive, not an accidental misspeaking but ongoing comments drenched in condescension and ugliness again and again and again. You can say, "But look, she gave away free things!" or "But look, she posed with all these people in a bookstore!" or "But look, she posts every compliment she ever gets so people must love her!" But none of that ultimately covers up for a personality that isn't actually humble or kind. (Read back posts on FB -- the snippy remarks at others didn't start just now.) It's all about character.

Speaking of character, this is someone who creates fictional characters and situations that revolve around gossip, backstabbing, cheating, and broadly-drawn stereotypical women characters who do catty things and say catty things to each other. They sell because they're juicy, entertaining guilty pleasures, not because they're good writing or original characters. Is it any wonder that the person who creates such characters enjoys cattiness, fueling personal attacks on others, and creating on online persona for herself where she's practically a cartoon character? This kind of book is fun because it indulges your inner 7th grader. Unfortunately, that's how this author seems to behave in her real interactions. Like a 7th grader.

She'll continue to have financial success. The books will continue to be entertaining to a certain type of consumer. Her team will keep placing her at events where she can pose with people and post pictures of her fans. But most importantly, this is her character, and people don't change.

I joined twitter and I started following her right before her most recent book was released. I was disgusted with her posts, pictures and most of all pictures of herself. It is a shame how vain she is. Right after I finished reading her book I saw her disappointment posts all over twitter because she was number two on the best seller list and not number one. Its appalling that she acts so entitled and so self absorbed. She wouldn't be where she is if her fans didn't support her. She should appreciate everyone of them and take constructive criticism to better herself and her work. The post on amazon was not about her character it was about the content of the book and I do not doubt she sits and reads every comment posted about her. Well here is another reader who will never PURCHASE another book she writes. And Lastly, she praised her fans for buying a book for a girl who couldn't afford it.... Well, call me psycho, but couldn't she donate some to the less privileged?? I'm sure she makes more than enough.......

  • I believe that as an author she is in charge of her brand and her image. Her husband should have known better, as should her agent, as should she. It's ridiculous and inexcusable behavior especially for an author on the NYT bestsellers list. I never have, nor will I ever pick up or recommend one of her books because if she is asinine enough to encourage people to engage in arguments on a negative review, then she cannot possibly be clever enough to write something I'd ever want to read.

    Reply
  • The author thinks the reviewer is chasing drama because the reviewer stands by her/his opinion? Why should the reviewer delete her/his post just because people didn't like it? Like I said, it's just the reviewer's opinion on a book. And who enjoys getting death threats?

    Reply
  • Her husband was petty, her assistant was terrible, and instead of putting an end to it, as any mature adult would have, she made the whole situation worse. There's only one person who looks bad here: it's Emily Giffin, and that her own fault. And, yes, I'm posting this anonymously, lest her deranged fans want to threaten me too.

  • Author, husband and assistant are ALL to blame, although obviously Emily is most responsible, because she kept egging it on and even seemed to blame the death threats on the reviewer's review! Quite frankly, she needs the help of a mental health professional (and she should take along the husband and assistant).

Plus, in relation to the post that started it all--I can totally see saying "I'd love to be #1 for once!" or something like that, but it's insanely tacky to complain about being #2 on a best-seller list.

I will make a note to avoid her books. I don't want to support unbalanced and nasty people.

  • Emily's assistant, Kate, should be fired. Using her personal Amazon account to bully and ridicule a reviewer while identifying herself in a professional capacity as Emily's assistant showed a glaring lack of professionalism, as well as a lack of understanding of public relations and the media, which is a problem when you are the first point of contact for Emily's brand. It wasn't even just one comment. Kate mocked and bullied the reviewer in multiple posts, while encouraging other Emily fans to do the same. Kate's behavior has done significant damage to Emily's professional reputation which cannot be undone. By continuing to employ Kate as her assistant and a representative of her brand, Emily is tacitly condoning her behavior. I don't care how much Emily likes Kate as a person. As an employee and a representative of Emily's brand, Kate's actions were inexcusable and any response from Emily other than a sincere apology and the termination of Kate's employment is irresponsible and insufficient.

  • I'm a reviewer AND an author (though haven't been very prolific in either field in recent months), but every time I see one of these "authors behaving badly" posts, I get so frustrated. This type of bullying drives good reviewers away from posting their thoughts about the book and instead leaves the "shills" -- friends and families -- that give the book only the highest ratings. The problem is that the purpose of reviews is to tell readers whether or not they should spend hard-earned money on a book. Reviews are NOT meant to stroke the ego of authors. It's not pleasant, as an author, to get a poor review, but that's life. Not everyone is going to like what you publish -- nor should they.

  • I pretty much agree with these responses and was very disappointed to see one of my very favorite authors reacting this way. I think she is hiding behind the whole "I didn't do it, my husband and assistant did" veil. Well posting on her Facebook and Twitter about their rants definitely did not help matters, and she obviously knew that from the start. I am very much a fan of her books and wrote a review of WWB on my blog (www.literette.wordpress.com) a few weeks back before I heard anything about this debacle. My personal feelings was that the book was good, but not excellent and certainly not her best. The point is, though, that I was writing my honest feelings, and no one should ever be attacked for that, unless they have struck first. Calling a book not as good as her others, as the author of the Amazon comment did, is certainly not an attack on an author, but rather a free opinion. This whole thing has left a very bad taste in my mouth when it comes to Giffin. Even the comments complaining "jokingly" about being #2 were a sure turnoff. I won't say that I'll quit reading her books, because I still respect her as a writer, but I am not sure I'll stay as loyal of a fan.

  • I wish a mother*** would call me up and make death threats over a book review. I would make that sh*t on the 5 oclock news. Two can play that game. The author is a sad pathetic person honestly. Who in their right mind with a little fame and money would allow this to happen in the first place? High profile people with common sense don't go on the internet trying to gloat to the top spot and make a big deal out of a critic. I don't like certain actors and if I voiced my opinion I am sure they don't give two sh!ts about what I have to say or have their publicist get on the internet to monitor bad criticism. If you making money and you happen to be on NYT best sellers list then that's all you need. The reviews are for readers not authors. Sales, downloads, fans, and hard work are for the artist as reassurance they are doing something right.

This author is a big turd from the bowels of hell. If she had a contract under my major publishing company I would suspend any kind of promotions, book signings and tours because of this. But that's who big publishing companies want as authors but won't give somebody the time of day that really deserves it. Whoever made death threats to the reviewer should be ashamed. This whole fiasco is terrible. Stuff like this is going to make it hard for self pub and major pub authors to make it. I also tend to think this was a publicity stunt to increase sales. Negative or Positive publicity it's all for show for somebody to find you somehow.

  • Are you kidding me?! All of you people are talking about never reading her books again because of...this? That's stupid. So she made a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't read her books if you like them. I'm not a fan of Giffin; she has one book I like. I don't like her work and even I can see that you're all acting like children. I will say this, though: Emily was 100% correct when she said that Corey A. Doyle liked the drama. I've dealt with a lot of groups - especially groups of girlfriends - who are having problems because one or two of the girls in the group like to start drama. This girl acts just like they do. She knew her comment would add fuel to the fire and that excited her. She also knew that commenting about the phone calls would cause yet another stir that she started. She gets a kick out of it. And then on top of all of it, she writes a blog about it so that she can - hopefully - stir it up some more. So, yes, Emily was right when she said Corey liked the drama.

    2. How can you know if Corey liked the drama without asking her? Also, EMILY was LOVING the drama because she sounds like a complete narcissist who loves the spotlight and revels in all the attention. As if she just doesn't get enough. She's like the Bill Gates is to Money as Emily Giffin is to Attention Whore.

    3. Her behaviour went beyond a mistake, bullying and condoning it is no mistake. There's nothing wrong about not reading anymore books from an author when they behave badly. If I was a reader of Emily's books, I would stop because I refuse to help increase the bank account of an author who has the type of personality that I hate and appears to be ungrateful for the success she has in her career (she should be happy that she is even on the best sellers list).

I feel bad for her fans, if my favorite authors are like her. I hope I always remain clueless about it.

  • Heaven knows why anyone with a conscience would change the review of a piece of literature from 5 stars to 1 star because the author submitted a heartfelt response on her authors page. I think we have all felt out of synch when we create work and don't get the response we wanted. it's a human trait = human.

That said, the person doing so is also the author of a photo stealing website on Tumblr which is involved in vigilante hunting down of images misused online to then oust the user by means of public lynching and harassment instead of taking the correct actions and dealing in court. In court it involves a fine and then it is over.

However negative data left online for people to find later (such as employees or potential partners or friends) is disgusting and comes under the spectrum of cyber bullying.

The correct way to deal in instance of having your work stolen is to contact the person misusing it or get a dmca takedown via the website provider. not having done any of those things before launching vitriol and nasty comments in someone's name is characteristic of a cyber bully.

and misuse of images when there is a correct and more dignified and professional way of dealing with such. e.g. contact directly with the person and a dmca takedown submitted with the web domain owner.

it just seems to me this woman (whose photography website looks like an angel owns it) has some personal issues and just likes to shit stir big time online, harass people, make defamatory comments about them before checking facts, and leave a nasty data trail about them which will affect them for many years to come.

who gives a shit if she feels the Facebook status was wrong? simple... navigate away and don't buy any more books... vote with your wallet. but to make a mountain out of a mole hill and slag people off to get somewhere ratings wise online is the wrong thing to do.

the authors statements on her Facebook page do not taking away the talent or the skill of the book you just read???? What the heck has that got to do with the price of fish in other words???

by her account... her dealings on other sites and harassing people should affect the way her clients think before employing her images... or anyone who has such taking them off their walls because she is acting like a b*tch online.

  • The Bundesliga promises a lot of action this year, with four teams capable of competing for the prize. Germany's strong showing at the 2006 World Cup helped increase the league in the eyes of many spectators, and it has become more competitive as a result.
