Follow Friday!

Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee’s View and Alison at Alison Can Read. It's where mega-super cool people meet other megatrons of cool. JOINN USSS.

I don't usually, as bad reviews of books/films/T.V always put me off particularly if there are multiple bad reviews about the same thing. However, I will still buy a book I REALLY want to read if it gets a bad review. Also, it really depends who it is who reviews it and why they didn't like it- if it's someone I know has very different tastes from me or says they hate it because it's too surreal/complicated/obscure/gimmicky, these are usually things a lot of people don't like that I usually enjoy!

To go back to the original question though, I don't usually buy books BECAUSE of a bad review, but if they're bad because they portray something favourable that I really disagree with (e.g a lot of people were saying on Goodreads that 'Hush, Hush' advocates a violent relationshio) then I do have a morbid curiosity to see if I agree or see how bad the book actually is. If I had more money I probably would buy these books but as it is I make do with extracts and quotes!

Thanks for reading and for following! I love me some followers.

  1. I totally agree with you! I actually loved Hush, Hush! Luckily I bought the book before reading any reviews because I was really intrigued by the cover and the summary and ended up loving it a lot!

  2. Great answer! Bad reviews make me curious and like you said if it is something that someone else doesn't like in a story that I will like I give it a shot!

  20. Yup, you really have a point with the money-thing. If I could I'd totally buy every book that sounds interesting to me but if there's a bad review it turns me off and I rather spend my money on another book, too.
Thanks for following and commenting on my blog, by the way - made sure to follow you back (via RSS):)

  21. Sounds about right :) Why read a book if theres tons of bad reviews?

  25. I've actually wanted to read Hush Hush for that reason!
Thanks for stopping by my blog! New follower here. :)

  26. Yeah, I'm always curious what makes people react so strongly to a book too. Although there are some reviewers that I really trust, and if they mention certain things that I know I'm not going to like, then I usually stay away from those books.

    I'm a new follower! :)

  35. Thanks for swinging by my FF . Morbid curiosity usually gets the best of me as well, but I must say I have to be drawn in by the book content itself as well before I spend money on it. Library's are usually my source for all "not sure" books.

New follower! (love the blog btw!)

    happy reading - Mo.

  36. Thanks for stopping by! I'm following back via RSS & Networked blogs

  37. New follower. Like your site. I wouldn't buy a book just because it got bad reviews. I wouldn't let bad reviews keep me from reading a book I was interested in, but I wouldn't purposely read a book with bad reviews.
    My FF:

  38. It's interesting that you bring up TV reviews, because it made me realize that I view them very differently than book reviews. I think I put a lot more stock in TV reviews for some reason! Thanks for stopping by my post.

  39. Nice Post, Thanks for your very useful information... I will bookmark for next reference.
